Relief mission to Sierra Leone

Let’s make some comparisons.
In the UK there is 1 (NHS) dentist per 2,400 people.
In Sierra Leone there is 1 dentist per 1,100,000 people.
In fact, there are more dentists working in my clinic and in the other clinics I can see from the doorway of my practice than in all of Sierra Leone combined. And this is despite their government spending more of their GDP (13.1%) on healthcare than we do (9%)!
Why? Because Sierra Leone is still suffering from a crippling civil war which ended a decade ago but claimed over 2 million lives, leaving behind over 75% of the world's amputees. The population has a median age of just 19. No wonder they’re short of trained medical staff - most of the population are children.
I’m looking to do something to improve their lives and ease a little suffering. I will be traveling to Sierra Leone (paying my own travel and expenses) in March for two weeks and working as a volunteer dentist for The Sierra Leone Six-Year Molar Focus School. I will help teach oral hygiene in schools, and perform restorations and extractions where needed. It’s not much, but it helps bring some relief to those less fortunate than us.
This will be my third volunteer trip - previous years have seen me go to Vietnam, and you have been very generous in the past. This year I have decided to go somewhere where there is not only greater need, but also it is harder to attract volunteers. Parts of the country are still not safe for locals, let alone foreigners.
But I can only do so much. These children need your help as well. Every donation - whether it’s financial or toys or clothes - will help to make their lives better.

Thanks to the generosity of the residents of Chiswick, the patients from our clinic and my fellow professionals, we have over 120kg of dental supplies, toys and clothes to ship over to Sierra Leone. We have also raised over £5,000. There's still time to give by clicking on this link.
