If you have had teeth removed in the past and now have gaps, you may have considered replacing the missing ones in order to improve your smile. There are many treatment options available to you at White Dental that will not only improve the appearance of your smile, but also improve the health of your gums and remaining teeth.
The benefits of filling these gaps is not only to give you a perfect smile, but it will also allow you to eat more comfortably and will take the strain off your other teeth. Missing teeth can affect your bite and your remaining teeth can start to tilt or move, which can cause them to weaken. Also, bone loss can occur in the areas without teeth, as bone needs stimulation to stay healthy. Having gaps in between your teeth means that food is more liable to get trapped, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. You may also find that having missing teeth can affect your speech, and even cause your facial muscles to sag.
What options are there for missing teeth?
At White Dental we will assess the condition of your current teeth and depending on the location of the gap(s) and the number you have missing, we will recommend the right treatment option for you. Replacement teeth will be matched to the shape and colour of your natural teeth, so that you cannot notice which one is the original tooth, and which is the replacement. We can offer you one of the following specialised treatments which include Dentures, Bridges, and Implants.
The quality of dentures has improved dramatically in recent years to provide a very comfortable and natural-looking solution to tooth loss. You can have full dentures fitted to replace your entire upper or lower teeth, or alternatively you can have partial dentures to fill one or a few missing teeth. Dentures are removable and are made of acrylic, nylon, or metal and fit snugly over the gums. Full dentures either cover the roof, or lower section of your mouth, and a thin layer of saliva between your palate and the denture creates suction which keeps them in position. Partial dentures clip onto your natural teeth with clasps that hold them securely in place. They can then be easily unclipped and removed.
These replace teeth by literally bridging the gap between the missing ones. Bridges are made of porcelain and/or metal and there are many design variations. The bridge is a fixed treatment that consists of two crowns which are placed on your teeth either side of the space, with a false tooth in the middle. Your new tooth is then held securely in place by your own natural teeth on either side.
An implant is a permanent solution for tooth loss that does not rely on your neighbouring teeth for support. Again this is a method suitable for either replacing one tooth, or several missing teeth. They are the ideal option if the loss of teeth has caused the mouth to shrink so that it can no longer support dentures, or if the patient prefers a more permanent replacement method. An implant is a titanium rod that is placed in your jawbone and holds the false tooth or teeth in place. The bone of your jaw will fuse with the metal rod, and then dentures or bridges are screwed or clipped onto the implant. Implants are very secure, and if looked after properly they can last for a long time.
